Traditionally, medical rides (Krankenfahrten) required paper prescriptions for medical rides (Muster 4) handed to the driver, manual signatures, and complicated reimbursement processes. Thanks to the partnership between Freenow and Techniker Krankenkasse, it's now much simpler.
If you're an eligible member in a participating city, you can manage your medical transportation directly through your smartphone. By syncing your TK approval letter with the Freenow app, you can book pre-approved rides in just a few taps.
How do I join the pilot?
Participation is currently limited to members who received a specific invitation letter from TK. If you received the letter, please follow the steps below:
Install the Freenow app for iOS/Android (here how).
Scan the QR code or click the link in your TK approval letter.
Click the link on the landing page to link your insurance to your account.
When you receive a new approval letter, you must scan the new QR code to update the app with your new dates/rides.
Booking & Managing Rides
How do I book?
Enter your destination and select "Techniker Krankenkasse" as your payment method.
Can I book in advance?
Yes. Use the "Later" feature instead of "Book Now" to schedule rides for future appointments. You can schedule multiple rides at once (e.g., for the whole month). Ensure the requested time falls within your TK-approved dates.
Can I edit or cancel?
Before a driver is assigned: You can edit or cancel a pre-booked ride up to 60 minutes before the pickup.
After a driver is assigned: You can no longer edit the trip. You must cancel and book again.
Check our Help Centre article to understand how to place bookings in the app.
Payments, Co-pays & Tips
Do I or drivers need to sign any papers for every ride?
No. This pilot is entirely paperless; no driver signature or physical M4 form is needed.
Can I tip my driver?
Not via the app for medical rides. You may tip your driver directly in cash or via their card terminal.
Eligibility & Vehicle Types
What if I wasn't invited to the pilot?
You can still book a regular Freenow ride, pay yourself, and submit the invoice (from the "Trips" section) to TK for manual reimbursement.
Can I book an XL or Accessible Taxi?
No. The pilot currently covers standard taxis only. If you need an XL vehicle, book it as a "Private" ride, pay upfront, and seek reimbursement from TK manually.
Can I book for someone else?
The ride must be booked through the Freenow account connected to the insured person. To assist someone else, you must use their account/QR code or book a regular ride for reimbursement.
Assistance & Issues
Will the driver help me?
Yes. Drivers are trained to assist. Use the message field when ordering to let the driver know if you need help with walking, experiencing weakness, or travelling with luggage.
What if the driver cancels or doesn't wait?
Waiting: Drivers will wait at the pickup point until the scheduled time.
Driver Cancellations: We will prioritize finding a replacement. If no driver is available in time, you may call a taxi company, pay yourself, and request reimbursement from TK.
