What are Freenow medical trips and why do they matter?
Medical trips (Krankenfahrten) take you to and from important health appointments — like physiotherapy, dialysis, chemotherapy, routine check-ups or recurring treatments.
If you're a Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) member with an approved ride, this pilot lets you book directly in Freenow, with the fare billed straight to your insurer.
Here's how it makes your life easier:
- No paperwork: forget physical M4 forms — everything is verified digitally as soon as your accounts are connected.
- No upfront payment: you don't need to pay for approved trips out of pocket and wait to be reimbursed. We bill TK directly, so you only pay the small statutory co-payment per ride, unless you're exempt.
- No signatures needed: once your ride ends, there's nothing left to sign so you can focus entirely on your appointment.
- One less thing to plan: set up your approved trips once and book them whenever you need, without re-explaining your situation each time.
How do I connect my Techniker Krankenkasse account to Freenow?
Connecting your accounts takes just a moment, and your approved trips will import automatically. Here’s how to do it:
- Open the Account tab in Freenow and select 'Approved medical trips'.
- Tap 'Get started' on the intro screen.
- Select Techniker Krankenkasse from the list of insurance providers to open the TK login page.
- Log in with your TK credentials (Versichertennummer and password). This happens securely on TK's page — Freenow never sees or stores your password.
- Review the data-sharing details (your name, date of birth, insurance number, membership details, co-payment exemption status and the start/destination addresses for your trips), tick the consent box and tap 'Weiter zu Freenow'.
- That's it! Once you see 'Accounts securely connected', your trips are imported and ready to book. If it doesn't go through, double-check your login details or reach out to our team.
Once connected, visit your Medical Profile to view your approvals, check trip details or tap 'Book an approved medical ride' to get going.
What if I don't have the TK app installed or set up?
You don't need the TK app installed, as the login process happens directly during the Freenow connection flow. However, you will need an active TK online account (Meine TK). If you haven't set one up yet, simply register with Techniker Krankenkasse before connecting.
Who can book medical trips through this pilot?
This pilot is currently available to Techniker Krankenkasse members who have approved medical trips in Hamburg, Berlin or Munich.
Which trips are covered?
Only trips approved in your TK account are covered — usually between your home and a medical facility, up to the approved weekly limit. You can review your dates, addresses, frequency and co-payment status anytime in your Medical Profile.
- Approved trips: select 'TK' as your payment method during booking.
- Other medical trips: if a ride isn't covered by your current approval, book it as a 'Private' ride and submit your invoice to TK for reimbursement afterwards.
Do I need to sign anything when the ride ends?
No, trips booked through this pilot don't require a signature. It's one less detail to worry about after your appointment.
Will my driver help me get into the car if I need assistance?
Yes, drivers on approved medical trips are ready to help you reach your appointment safely. If you need a hand walking, carrying luggage or just a bit of extra support, leave a short note in the message field when booking. Your driver will see it and come prepared to lend a hand.

Keep in mind that once disconnected, your approved medical trips will no longer be visible or available to book.
