Who can rent a Carsharing vehicle and which driving licenses are accepted?
To rent a car via Carsharing, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Hold a valid identity card
- Have a credit card
- Possess a European driving license that has been valid for at least 1 year (Temporary or Digital licenses are not accepted)*
Once you've registered and your license has been verified, you can book a car from any of our Carsharing partners directly through the Freenow app.
Important: Only the driver whose license was verified during registration is authorized to drive the vehicle. Allowing others to drive the car is a violation of our Terms and Conditions and may result in penalties.
What types of Carsharing vehicles are available in the Freenow app?
We offer a wide selection of electric vehicles designed to suit various needs, including:
- Compact city cars for 2 people
- Mid-sized cars for 4 people
- XL vehicles with larger capacity for bigger groups or extra cargo
Car availability and pricing are determined by our partner suppliers.
What do I need to do before my first rental?
Before your first trip, you’ll need to complete the following steps:
- Validate your Driving License and Identity – We'll guide you through the process to ensure everything is verified.
- Set up a valid payment method – We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay.
You can book using your personal Freenow account or a business account (if Multimobility services are enabled).
How to validate my driving license and ID Card
The license validation process is quick and easy, typically taking just a few minutes. For insurance purposes, we only accept:
- EU-issued driving licenses (Type B) in card format that have been valid for at least 1 year (temporary or digital licenses are not accepted).
- European ID cards, passports, or residence permits with a photo.
Follow these steps to complete your validation:
- Open the Freenow app and select the Carsharing tab to choose a vehicle.
- Once you've chosen a car, tap on 'Add Required Documents'
- Enter your address details
- In the 'Driving License' section, select the issuing country and upload clear photos of the front and back of your license. If necessary, choose "My license/ID is readable" or retake the photo
- Take a selfie to verify your identity. Ensure your face is clearly visible, and if you wear glasses, your eyes should be unobstructed
After your details are reviewed and validated (usually within 24-48 hours by our partner Onfido), your account will be activated, and you’ll be ready to rent a shared car via the Freenow app.
Note: Ensure that Freenow has access to your camera through your phone settings to complete the process.
